About
I’m a documentary filmmaker, photographer, writer, and researcher and hold a PhD in comparative literature and certification in documentary filmmaking from NYU. My award-winning, breakout documentary, “Thiaroye (chai-ROY) by the Sea”, is a music-driven short that follows Senegalese rapper Sister LB as she struggles to find her voice while contending with the pressure of poverty, misogyny, and tradition. “Thiaroye by the Sea” premiered at the Margaret Mead Film Festival in Manhattan, won the audience choice award at Nitehawk Film Festival in Brooklyn and was in competition for best short documentary of the year at New Filmmakers Los Angeles. I have worked closely with filmmaker and scholar Manthia Diawara, filming a piece on Senegalese musician Baaba Maal, as well as editing and translating a series of video installations on philosopher Édouard Glissant for the Villa Empain in Brussels and Centre Pompidou in Paris. I have also worked with renowned artist Kader Attia, filming a Lebou spirit possession ceremony for his art installation “Sacrifice and Harmony” exhibited in Frankfurt, Germany. My writing has been published in major outlets like CNN and Film Quarterly.
